Anna Baldwin
Anna Baldwin has worked for Peacemills Care Home for a total of 6 years. She started with the company as a Care Worker. She enjoys her job and has strived to ‘work her way up the ladder’. Last year Anna’s Manager gave her the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities within the Care Home as the first step towards becoming Deputy Manager. Anna came to Business Advice Direct in September 2005 at the request of her Manager, who had used Business Advice Direct in the past for the Working in Care Induction Standards Course. She asked us if we could help her with her Adult Numeracy and Literacy skills to gain a recognised qualification.Anna felt, as she had not done any learning since leaving school, that she wanted to make sure her Literacy and Numeracy skills were adequate to help her when she started her NVQ in Care. Although Anna was very nervous at the thought of sitting the tests she knew that this would give her confidence in future learning and help her in her career development.Anna attended the Business Advice Direct centre, completing an Initial Assessment to identify her current skill levels which in turn helped the tutors to identify the right courses for Anna to develop to Test standard.Having completed the assessment Anna proceeded with her learning and progressed to a Prepare for Test in both Literacy and Numeracy consisting of practise questions in readiness for the Test itself. Having completed this successfully Anna continued with the National Tests and successfully completed them thus gaining her Adult Literacy and Numeracy Certificates.Anna found the centre staff friendly and helpful with a relaxed environment, not a bit like school which had bothered Anna at first, making her less nervous. She felt she was in control of her time, and was able to work at her own pace.Anna since passing her National Tests has completed and passed her Care NVQ Level 2 and in May 2006 she became the Manager at Peacemills and is now working towards her RMA qualification. Anna is a testimony to how learning can help skills and knowledge and help to gain a better job, promotion and a higher salary(!)
“learndirect courses are a really good way of learning, allowing individuals to work at a pace that suits them. The centre had a very relaxed atmosphere and as a learner I was helped and supported by the tutors to feel less anxious about ‘going back to school’, infact it didn’t feel like a classroom at all which had worried me initially”Anna Baldwin - Peacemills Care Home
Anna has sent other staff members to Business Advice Direct for Literacy and Numeracy training and for the learndirect Working in Care Induction Standards course, which she found to be of great benefit to new staff having entered the caring profession.
“I didn’t get any qualifications at school, which was quite a while ago and now I am the proud owner of 2 National Certificates, in Adult Literacy and Numeracy”Anna Baldwin - Peacemills Care Home
