Tutors are doing it for themselves!

Five tutors from Business Advice Direct (BAD), which provides highly successful learndirect centres across the UK, decided to practice what they preach and improve their own skills as well as those of their students!
Lisa Whitehouse, who is a tutor at the Stockport learndirect centre (BAD Stockport), along with Dave Grasham from BAD Lincoln, Adam Rowthorn from BAD Kettering, Tony Goodman from BAD Derby and Monika Mitoraj from BAD Leicester, regularly help their students tackle Level 1 and 2 numeracy courses.
But they decided to study for Adult Numeracy Level 3 specialist support themselves – and have all passed with flying colours!
The training was arranged with Selby College near Leeds by BAD Head of Funded Learning Fiona Wright. The tutors became learners when they studied at BAD Derby every fortnight over a number of months and they were guided through the course by John Barton and Carole Collins from Selby College.
Lisa, who has always found Maths difficult, is thrilled to have achieved Level 3.
“It was really beneficial learning as a group, because we could all support one another when needed,” she explained. “I was particularly pleased to have passed and receive my certificate as I have always struggled with Maths – and to now be able to support learners with their own numeracy development is really rewarding. I am proud of myself for achieving the qualification!”
Spurred on by his success, Tony is now studying for a University Diploma in Teaching Maths.
He said:
“I was really pleased to achieve Level 3 specialist support and decided to see how far I could go! Now I am studying for a Diploma, which is classed as a Level 5 numeracy qualification – and when I have achieved the qualification it will enable me to specialise in teaching Maths for Business Advice Direct.”
Fiona is delighted with the tutors’ success and commented:
“There were a lot of assignments to complete based around the course, as well as all candidates being observed supporting learners. I am delighted that our tutors are always keen to improve their own skills, which of course enables them to provide greater support to our learners.”
She continued: “I am very proud of our staff at BAD. They are all dedicated to providing excellent service – and improving their own skills is just one of the ways in which they can keep up their high standards. Congratulations to them all!”
Dave and Lisa recently received certificates on behalf of the group at Selby College where they were presented by Principal Allan Stewart.
