Studying to improve his career prospects had an unexpected benefit for Harry Kelsall when he bumped into a former best mate that he hadn’t seen for 12 years!
Harry, who lives in Stockport, has spent most of his life working 70 hours a week as a heavy goods driver.
He decided to improve his computer skills at his local learndirect centre, which is provided by Business Advice Direct (BAD), in order to find work in a transport office – hopefully with shorter hours!
And the first time he stepped through the door at BAD Stockport he spotted his old friend Roger Murray – a best mate he hasn’t seen for 12 years!
“I recognised him straight away, but he didn’t recognise me at first!” laughed Harry. “I was really surprised – and the memories came flooding back. I’ve known Roger for 30 years. He introduced me to punk rock music and we used to go to Manchester clubs to listen to it – including Tony Wilson’s club The Hacienda – and there were a few pub crawls as well!”
The friends lost touch when Harry moved house, but now they have been reunited they are best mates again and regularly go out for a pint.
Roger had been a student at BAD Stockport for a long while and has gained his European Computer Driving Licence.
Tutor Andrew Berry was delighted to witness the reunion and commented:
“It was really surprising to hear how Harry and Roger had not been in contact with each other for so long, considering they lived so close to one another. It was a heart felt reunion for them both and I’m very pleased they are back to being best mates! Harry and Roger are now in constant contact with one another.”
BAD Head of Funded Learning, Fiona Wright, said:
“We are always delighted when old friends meet up at BAD. It just goes to show that improving your career prospects can transform your life!”
