Mum aims to retrain as nurse

Despite being a housewife and full time mum, working part-time and coping with English as her second language, 42-year-old Tooba Khadem braved her fears that she was too old and went back to learning at BAD Northern Moor.
And now she is achieving the qualifications she needs to gain a place on a university nursing course.
Tooba was born in Iran and came to the UK 16 years ago. For the past five years she has worked part-time in customer service at her local Tesco and needed to gain English and Maths qualifications to fulfil her dream of training to be a nurse.
‘Because English is not my first language I needed L2 Literacy and L2 Numeracy and that is why I went to the centre,’ said Tooba. ‘I was nervous about going because of my age, but from the first time I spoke to the tutor she put me at ease about everything. The great thing about the centre is that you don’t feel as if you are under pressure – you can take it at your own pace.’
Now with L2 Literacy under her belt, Tooba is hoping to complete her qualifications and start her university nursing course in September.
‘Going to the centre has made me realise that if you want to do something you just need the determination to go for it,’ she said. ‘Learning takes a lot longer for me at 42 than it does for my daughter! Achieving something that – as a housewife and full time mum – I thought was impossible, has given me great confidence and the belief in myself that I can do the university course. ‘
