Injured worker retrains at Sheffield centre

Despite a serious injury at work which left him unable to retain his job, 55 year old widow Michael Deeley was determined not to sit at home and feel sorry for himself.
He made his way to BAD Sheffield where he enjoyed Literacy courses so much that he stayed on at the centre to learn IT as well.
‘I was working at a tile centre until 15 kilos of tiles fell on my leg from 4’ height,’ said Michael. ‘I have been off work on disability since and will not be able to return to that job. Sitting at home I felt I was stagnating and really wanted to do something and I knew that probably the best way for me to get back into work would be to gain some sort of IT qualifications. It is essential to be able to use a computer these days. Previously I’ve never had to use computers – I was a landlord before working at the tile centre – so I thought it was about time I learned!’
Michael was immediately put at ease by the staff at BAD Sheffield.
‘I think the centre and the courses are marvellous!’ he said. ‘It’s absolutely brilliant and all the lads there are great!’
He continued: ‘I enjoy Literacy because I do read a lot. What surprised me and made me very happy is how well I did after 38 years out of a learning situation! Now I hope to do the ECDL eventually. I feel that going to BAD Sheffield has opened up a lot of new routes that will lead to a better future for me. It has been very worthwhile.’
