Safe harbour for unemployed skipper
Posted on April 8th, 2008
Former boat skipper Dean Banfield became unemployed but after studying at BAD Worcester he is set to open his own shop in the next few months!
He originally attended the centre to gain the CSCS card – but while he was there he discovered the many other courses available and decided some of them would suit him far better!
Dean gained both the CSCS card and the Food Hygiene certificate and is now looking for premises in Worcester where he plans to open a second-hand shop.
‘I went to the centre because I was referred by the job centre and it has been really useful,’ he said.’ I took the CSCS card but then realised there are a lot more options and other things you can do as well and I thought some of these would suit me better. I was able to take a lot of other courses and am planning to open a second hand shop now.’
Dean feels that attending the centre has definitely helped him.
‘I surprised myself – especially after not doing any education for a long time!’ he said. ‘It was tremendous. Made me really think I had missed out on so much and forgotten so many things. And the staff at the centre were great, very polite and pleasant.’
