Single parent boosts CV – and career prospects

Posted on April 8th, 2008

Single parent Tracey Knight used to work at Asda on the check out but gave it up because it was difficult to juggle work with caring for her children.

But after being unemployed for the past three years she is now working as a volunteer at BAD Luton where she is also gaining the qualifications to set her on a new career path.

Tracey has already gained an NVQ in Customer Service as well as L2 Literacy and L1 Numeracy and is hoping to find work in a school.

With her children now aged 13 and 15, she is confident she will be able to find work, thanks to her new qualifications.

‘The job centre suggested I attend the centre and I agreed that if I had more qualifications under my belt hopefully I would be able to get a better job. I want to work in a school because I enjoy working with children – and of course it would fit in with my own children’s school hours. I realised that if had Maths and English qualifications it would help me achieve my goal.’

Tracey said she really enjoyed attending the Luton centre and that the flexible hours made it easy for her to undertake her learning.

‘The tutor makes everyone feel at home and is always available if you need help with courses,’ she said. ‘I feel far more confident now about applying for jobs and have much more to put on my CV.’
