trainingBetter communication skills and increased confidence have made work more enjoyable for newly-married Hannah Holland from Saxilby in Lincoln.

Hannah has just gained an NVQ in Customer Service thanks to Lincoln learndirect centre which is provided by Business Advice Direct – after her boss encouraged her to gain the qualification.

‘The training has been really beneficial for me and has given me more confidence in my role especially when answering the phone,’ said Hannah, who works as a receptionist for international fertiliser manufacturer Nutrel Products. ‘I thought the course was very good and the assessor Claire Brelsford visited me at work and communicated well and kept me up to date.’ (more…)

Qualifications are good for you – and your employer!

qualificationsLeicester mum Susan O’Driscoll was encouraged by her employer to study for an NVQ - and is now basking in the joys of gaining extra qualifications.

‘Every qualification you get really gives you a boost. It’s good for you and gives you more confidence,’ she said.

Susan, who works as Practice Manager and Dental Nurse at Kibworth Dental Practice in Leicester, said her boss, dentist Raj Pancholi, suggested that she take the qualification because he was sure she would do well.

‘He felt I was good with the patients and said it would be another feather in my cap!’ she explained. (more…)

Never too late to learn!

Tina LaneA confidence and skills boost courtesy of learndirect is helping a Worcester mum find work following redundancy.

Tina Lane used to work for the Commission for Social Care Inspection until the company relocated to Birmingham and Tina was unable to accommodate the move.

‘I was made redundant at the start of April and I had known for some time that it was a possibility,’ Tina explained. ‘I took the NVQ in Customer Care because I am good at it, it is my forte, but I have nothing on paper. I knew that the NVQ, which is nationally recognised, would help me apply for another job.’ (more…)

Stepping out for charity!

Training sales executive Jo Lancaster is literally putting her best foot forward to raise money for charity in the Sheffield Half Marathon and Great Fun Run on Saturday (27th April).

Jo, who works for Business Advice Direct – one of the most successful providers of learndirect centres in the country - started running again in January last year after recovering from a broken metatarsal. (more…)

Step up for Stafford!

Provided by Business Advice Direct (BAD), one of the country’s leading providers of learndirect centres, BAD Stafford offers the full range of learndirect courses, particularly Numeracy and Literacy, and also offer training for the CSCS card which proves competence to work on a building site.

Based at Hollins Business Centre on Rowley Street, which also accommodates an office of the Prince’s Trust, the new centre has disabled access and can cater for 16 learners at a time.

BAD Head of Funded Learning Fiona Wright said: ‘We are delighted to open our first learning centre in Staffordshire. We have already established an excellent working relationship with the local Jobcentre Plus and are keen to get started and help develop the skills and employment opportunities of people in Stafford. Looking for workEverything you need to help you find work is available now at Business Advice Direct’s learndirect centres in Ashton, Stockport, Sheffield and Darlington.

Writing a CV, handling interviews, completing gruelling application forms and searching for jobs are all made easy by the Employability course, which takes around four days to complete and is usually spread over two weeks.

Single mum launches career in computers

Turkish-born lone parent Ilkay Pether is a full time mum to her three-year-old daughter and English is her second language – but she still managed to achieve qualifications that helped her gain a place on a computer course.

The unemployed 35 year old, who arrived in the UK in 1996, decided to take the opportunity while she was not working to undertake training.

She attended BAD Luton and gained Literacy and Numeracy qualifications and with these under her belt has landed a place on a full time computer course at a local college. (more…)

Computers no problem for new grandad!

grandadFifty eight year old Michael Moody used to undertake heavy work in foundries until he developed heart problems in 1999 and could no longer cope with the heavy lifting involved.

Although he was transferred to a laboratory where he analysed sand samples, Michael was made redundant last year and knew he needed to retrain to find lighter work.

He realised that he would have to conquer his lack of knowledge about computers if he was to find another job.

‘Basically if you are going to apply for work you have to be able to use a computer,’ he said. ‘If I have IT qualifications on my CV it will definitely help me find work.’ (more…)

Make-over for learner’s career prospects

Middle-aged womanForty-nine year old Lynne Elley gave up work nine years ago to look after her mother.

Following her mother’s death she realised that she needed to retrain in order to find work.

‘I needed to reinvent myself!’ said Lynne. ‘I went to the Jobcentre and they referred me to learndirect and I have been attending BAD Lincoln for more than two years. I think I have done every course now and I’m hoping to find work in administration.’ (more…)

Wake up call for Mark

For unemployed Mark Clancy, attending BAD Luton was a real wake up call and made him realise exactly what prospective employers require and just what skills are needed to find work.

Aged 37, Mark used to work as a warehouse and maintenance man - but when he lost his lift to work, Mark was unable to get another job.

Unemployed since March last year he went along to BAD Luton to gain the CSCS card and find work on a building site – but having gained the card he realised that it would be a good idea to gain extra qualifications as well. (more…)
