If English didn’t capture your imagination at school, it’s easy to see it as something quite separate from real life.
Does it matter that you’re not 100 per cent sure when to use an apostrophe? Everyone gets the gist of what you’re trying to say, don’t they? Is it the end of the world if you can’t read Harry Potter to your kids? Can’t they just watch the movie? And if that NHS form is really confusing, can’t you just ask the receptionist to fill it in for you?
We understand why you might feel that way if you’ve struggled in the past. But getting good at English means more power to YOU.
How great would it feel to impress an employer with a beautifully presented CV, or to type up a letter dictated by your boss?
English is a tool which can be used very precisely. Master it, and you can be sure that everyone will understand exactly what you mean, with no confusion. When you can read and write with confidence, so much is possible.
When you first arrive at a learndirect centre, our tutors will ask you to complete an assessment to find out how good you are at English. It’s nothing to worry about; it just makes sure we don’t waste time teaching you things you already know.
We’ll also listen to you, finding out what you need help with, and what level you need to reach in order to achieve your goals.
We’ll then put together a personalised programme to improve your reading, writing and communication skills.
You’ll be writing more clearly and accurately in no time, and you’ll be able to read and understand so much more.
In the last academic year, we worked with 998 adults who successfully passed their OCR Level 1 Literacy Award, and 906 who went on to pass the Level 2 Award. All our learners agree that passing these certificates really boosted their confidence at home and in the workplace.
